My Health Insurance
Guide Book for Wisconsin - 2010 The comprehensive Health
Insurance Guide Book (HIG) is designed to educatefamilies
and other service providers in Wisconsin about their legal rights related
to health insurance and managed care. How many times have the families you
served heard: "CLAIM DENIED." These two simple words can have
a devastating effect on a family's budget and emotional wellbeing. A claim
denial often means unpaid medical bills that can make recovery from an illness
much more complicated and add an extra burden of stress on family members.
Families are often too overwhelmed to fully understand their legal options
to challenge these denials. The HIG includes information on:
|
|
the
major kinds of health insurance plans |
|
|
the
legal protections afforded by state and federal health insurance law |
|
|
how
families can pro-actively avoid coverage denials |
|
|
how
to deal with coverage and claim denials |
|
|
special
coverage strategies faced by families with children with special health
care needs |
2010 Resources
Guide
Finding
the right information and resources can be a huge challenge. Even seasoned
advocates can struggle through the endless number of useless websites
and dead-end sources in search of accurate and timely information. While
many rely on a handful of tried-and-true resources, imagine having over
150 resources all in one place and right at your fingertips! For these
purposes, ABC for Health, Inc. has compiled the 2008 Resources Guide.
Our staff has relied upon many of these resources for years in order to
set advocates and clients on the path to better health care coverage and
services. Most recently, we have added a large number of policy-related
websites so that advocates and clients can keep up on the latest developments
and get involved at the decision-making level. Each resource contains
a phone number and website, when available, as well as a description of
the utility of the resource. They are organized by subject, and the guide
contains a handy index at the end to make it as user-friendly as possible.
HealthWatch Toolkit
HealthWatch
coalitions are developing across Wisconsin to identify systemic problems
within the health care system and create a collective, focused, and amplified
voice to advocate for change. ABC for Health, Inc. has prepared this toolkit
to help you start and sustain a HealthWatch coalition in your area. This
kit is a tool for parents, advocates, providers, and others interested
in organizing a group of people to focus on health care coverage and access
issues. Use this step-by-step guide to create and run a HealthWatch coalition
in your community. You and the work you do are the keys to putting the
toolkit's resources into action.
3 Steps Kit
Thousands
of families and children in Wisconsin are eligible for health care coverage,
but due to system complexity and lack of both appropriate outreach and
advocacy assistance, many of these families go without the care and coverage
they need. ABC for Health, Inc. has created a valuable publication to
help. The 3-Steps Kit is a guide to acquiring, using, and keeping public
benefits.
2010 AdvoKit
The
AdvoKit is a tool that includes essential information for service providers
who guide families toward much-needed health care coverage and services.
Topics include: Acquiring, Using, and Keeping Public Benefits; BadgerCare
Plus, BadgerCare Plus Prenatal and Emergency Services, and Practical Tips
and Information to help families negotiate the complex health care financing
system.

My Medical Debt Survival Guide
Paying
for health care is becoming increasingly difficult. Many insured employees
struggle to afford rising deductibles and premiums. Losing a job, or quitting
voluntarily, can mean losing affordable coverage for the worker and, often,
the entire family. When there is a health crisis in a family, uninsured
members are forced into emergency rooms or to pay "up front"
for medical treatment, spending large amounts of money before services
are even rendered. When the uninsured are unable to pay the full medical
bill in cash at the time of service, many of them are turned away, compromising
their health. The inability to pay coupled with treatment means compounding
medical bills and an eventual debt burden for the entire family. Rising
medical debt levels and increasing bankruptcy rates are affecting people
across Wisconsin. People need basic information about preventing medical
debt, as well as options for paying for their medical debt. This comprehensive
guidebook highlights individual coverage strategies, case scenarios, sample
letters, contact information, and local resources. As a consumer-oriented
publication, You and Your Medical Debt is an easy read and offers quick
access to important legal information.

Asset Mapping Tool
This
tool is designed to assess the strengths present in your state as you
consider implementing components of a Managed Advocacy process. This tool
will help you identify potential partners and resources as you move ahead
with these efforts. A very important consideration when using this tool
is to reflect upon the current political environment in your state, including
realistic assessments of the relationships between participating agencies.
