1. CASE TIP: MEDICAID COVERS PERSONAL CARE SERVICES FOR ADULT CHILDREN BY QUALIFIED FAMILY MEMBERS
Personal care services include help with bathing, dressing, meal preparation, and many other types of assistance with everyday activities. Medicaid covers these services for qualified individuals. But did you know that Medicaid will reimburse a parent or family member for providing these services for an adult child?
Consider the following situation: Eric is 19 years old and is a Medicaid recipient. He has special needs and requires personal care services. His father, John, must decide whether to take a new job or stay home and take care of Eric.
Good news! It is possible for John to be reimbursed for providing personal care services to his son, if he meets certain requirements. John must meet the training and other requirements for a personal care worker and be an employee or independent contractor of the provider who has prescribed the services.
Remember, this only applies to children over the age of 18. For more information contact your local personal care provider agency.

4. UNMET MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS AMONG CHILDREN IN THE CHILD WELFARE SYSTEM
A recent study of a nationally representative sample of children ages 2 to 14 involved in the child welfare system finds nearly one-half have clinically significant emotional or behavioral problems. But only one-quarter off youth in the system received mental health treatment. The full article, "Mental Health Needs and Access to Mental Health Services by Youth Involved with Child Welfare: A National Survey," is available in the August 2004 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

5. MENTAL HEALTH AND MEDICAID NEWS FROM THE URBAN INSTITUTE
At least 10 percent of low-income children have serious emotional and behavioral problems. States have adopted widely different ways of financing and delivering children’s mental health services.
